Is a New Moana Movie Coming Out

A new Moana movie is officially in the works at Disney. The studio has announced they are developing a live-action remake of the beloved 2016 animated film, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirmed to reprise his role as the shapeshifting demigod Maui.

Here’s a quick rundown of the key details surrounding the upcoming live-action Moana:

  • Release Date: June 27, 2025
  • Cast: Dwayne Johnson as Maui
  • Director: Thomas Kail
  • Producers: Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Beau Flynn
  • Writer: Jared Bush
  • Executive Producer: Auli’i Cravalho

This remake of the Oscar-nominated animated feature is one of several highly-anticipated live-action reimaginings of classic Disney animated films on the horizon, including The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey and Snow White led by Rachel Zegler.

When Will The Live-Action Moana Be Released?

The Rock himself revealed in an Instagram post on June 13, 2023 that the Moana remake will hit theaters on June 27, 2025.

“Humbled (and excited) to share our official release date for our live action @disneystudios MOANA June 27, 2025,” Johnson wrote. “It’s my privilege to share our legends, songs, and dance of our Polynesian culture with all of you and your families.”

This gives Disney just about two years to complete work on the film before its slated summer 2025 premiere. The movie began early development shortly before Johnson first announced it was happening on April 3, 2023.

Who Is Starring in the Moana Remake?

Dwayne Johnson as Maui

The lone casting confirmation so far is that Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as the boastful demigod Maui, whom he voiced in the original 2016 film.

Johnson revealed his return alongside the remake’s announcement, writing on Instagram:

“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace, mana and warrior strength. I wear our culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once in a lifetime opportunity to reunite with MAUI, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”

Bringing Johnson back ensures the remake will include one of the most beloved characters from the animated movie. Fans are eager to see the charismatic actor embody Maui in live-action.

Auli’i Cravalho Not Returning as Moana

However, the voice of Moana herself, Auli’i Cravalho, will not be reprising her breakout role in the remake. Cravalho was just 14 years old when she voiced Moana in the 2016 original. Now in her early 20s, Cravalho announced in May 2023 that she will not return as the titular heroine, but will serve as an executive producer on the remake.

In an Instagram video, Cravalho explained her reasoning:

“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital the casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”

Cravalho emphasized the importance of finding an actress of Pacific Islander descent to take on the role and honor the culture. Disney will be conducting an open casting call to find the new big-screen Moana.

Open Casting for Lead Roles

No other casting details have been revealed yet. Disney has not announced who will play Moana’s parents Chief Tui and Sina, her eccentric grandmother Gramma Tala, the rooster Heihei, or her friend the ocean. Like with Moana, it’s expected these roles will go to actors of appropriate Pacific Islander heritage.

Who Is Directing & Writing the Moana Remake?

Director: Thomas Kail

Disney has tapped Tony-winning director Thomas Kail to helm the live-action remake. Kail is best known for directing the Broadway smash hit Hamilton, as well as the filmed version of Hamilton for Disney+. He also directed the Fox live musical Grease: Live! and Broadway’s In the Heights.

The Rock praised Kail’s “spirit, drive, talent, passion and hunger” in an Instagram post announcing his attachment.

Writer: Jared Bush

Jared Bush, who co-wrote the screenplay for the 2016 animated Moana, is expected to return to write the script for the live-action remake. Bush’s other Disney credits include co-writing Zootopia.

Bush is likely to collaborate on the Moana remake screenplay with seasoned Disney writer Dana Ledoux Miller. Miller penned the book for the Frozen musical on Broadway and worked on Disney Channel’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Together, Bush and Miller will adapt the story to build out the world of the Pacific Islands and Moana’s journey to save her people.

What Will the Moana Remake Be About?

The live-action Moana will likely closely follow the plot of the original animated movie, with some expanded elements.

Here’s a refresher on the 2016 film’s story:

The adventurous teenager Moana is the chief’s daughter on the Polynesian island of Motunui. When her island’s fish and crops begin dying due to a spreading blight, Moana learns the only way to save her people is to voyage across the sea to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, which was stolen by the demigod Maui.

Moana sets sail on an epic journey across the ocean accompanied by the arrogant but charismatic Maui. They face several obstacles and monstrous foes along the way, and Moana discovers her true calling as a wayfinder.

The live-action adaptation will bring the tropical island setting to life and further explore Polynesian culture through dance and music numbers. Details may also be expanded about the mythology of the gods in Moana’s world.

Overall though, the remake seems to be staying true to the classic story that made Moana so iconic.

Will There Be New Music in the Live-Action Moana?

The animated Moana featured an unforgettable soundtrack with songs by Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, including the Golden Globe-winning anthem “How Far I’ll Go”.

Based on past Disney live-action remakes, it’s highly likely the Moana remake will include new original songs as well as new takes on favorites from the animated film like “You’re Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go”.

Foa’i, Mancina, and Miranda may all return to compose fresh music for the live-action movie musical. Hamilton director Thomas Kail’s involvement also hints at dynamic song and dance numbers being central to the remake.

The Oceanic feels and powerful lyrics celebrating Polynesian culture are sure to be highlighted again in the new soundtrack.

Is There a Trailer for the Live-Action Moana?

Unfortunately no trailer or footage from the live-action Moana exists yet, as the film has not begun production.

Disney is sure to release a magical first teaser trailer for the remake in 2024 to start building hype for the blockbuster release. Until then, fans will have to keep patiently waiting for a peak at the new cinematic world of Moana.

How Does the Moana Remake Fit Into Disney’s Lineup of Live-Action Reimaginings?

The upcoming Moana remake is one of many live-action remakes of beloved animated Disney films the studio currently has in the works.

Some other highly-anticipated live-action remakes of Disney classics coming up include:

  • The Little Mermaid – Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, releasing May 2023
  • Snow White – Led by Rachel Zegler as Snow White, releasing 2024
  • The Lion King prequel – Directed by Barry Jenkins, in development
  • Lilo and Stitch – Produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, in development
  • Hercules – Starring Ariana Grande as Meg, in development
  • Peter Pan – Jude Law as Captain Hook, in development

Disney is prioritizing diversity in casting these remakes, while aiming to honor the legacy of the original animated films. Fans are eager to see fresh takes on classics like Moana translated into stunning live-action.

The Moana remake hitting theaters in 2025 is sure to make a huge splash as Disney’s next live-action adventure.

Conclusion

The magical world of Moana is coming back to the big screen in live-action form in just two short years. Dwayne Johnson is set to reprise his larger-than-life role as Maui, promising an epic and culturally-resonant movie.

While lead voice actress Auli’i Cravalho won’t return as Moana, she’ll be involved behind the scenes guiding the casting to find the perfect new Moana. Fans are eager to follow this new actress on Moana’s journey across the sea to save her people.

With the creators of the beloved original film on board alongside visionary Hamilton director Thomas Kail, hopes are high for the Moana remake to capture the beauty of Polynesian culture through enchanting storytelling and music. Kids and adults alike are sure to find plenty to love when Disney’s live-action Moana finally voyages into theaters on June 27, 2025.

It’s Not About Who Wants You; It’s About Who Values and Respects You

It's Not About Who Wants You; It's About Who Values and Respects You

In a world full of fleeting desires and temporary attractions, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of being wanted. However, the true essence of a meaningful relationship lies not in being desired, but in being valued and respected.

When someone wants you, it often stems from their own needs, desires, or attraction. While this may feel flattering, it’s crucial to look beyond the surface. Genuine fulfillment comes from relationships where you are cherished for who you truly are—not just for what you can provide or how you make someone feel in the moment.

The Importance of Being Valued

Being valued means that your worth is recognized. It’s about being appreciated for your unique qualities, your character, and the essence of who you are. When someone values you, they see beyond the superficial. They acknowledge your strengths, accept your weaknesses, and embrace you as a whole person.

The Importance of Being Valued

This type of connection fosters a deeper sense of belonging and fulfillment. When you are valued, you feel seen, heard, and understood. You don’t have to constantly prove your worth, because the people who value you already recognize it.

Respect: The Foundation of True Relationships

Respect is the cornerstone of any meaningful relationship. It goes hand in hand with being valued. When someone respects you, they honor your boundaries, listen to your opinions, and treat you with kindness and consideration. Respectful relationships are built on trust, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to each other’s well-being.

Respect: The Foundation of True Relationships

In contrast, a relationship lacking respect can leave you feeling undervalued, disregarded, and even hurt. It’s essential to surround yourself with people who not only want you but who also respect your individuality and autonomy.

The Distinction Between Want and Value

It’s crucial to recognize the difference between someone who wants you and someone who values and respects you. Wanting can be driven by selfish motives or temporary desires, whereas valuing and respecting someone comes from a place of genuine care and understanding.

Respect: The Foundation of True Relationships

Relationships based solely on want may be intense but often lack depth and sustainability. On the other hand, relationships where you are valued and respected are likely to be more enduring and fulfilling. These are the connections that contribute positively to your life, bringing you joy, growth, and a sense of security.

Choosing the Right Relationships

It’s important to be discerning about the relationships you invest in. Prioritize those who show you respect and value. These are the people who will stand by you during tough times, celebrate your successes, and support your dreams.

Surround yourself with individuals who see your worth and treat you with the dignity you deserve. These relationships are the ones that will enrich your life, helping you to grow and flourish.

Choosing the Right Relationships

Share the Message

As you reflect on the importance of being valued and respected, consider sharing this message with others. Encourage them to seek out relationships that are grounded in mutual respect and appreciation. Let’s spread the word that true fulfillment in relationships comes not from being wanted, but from being valued and respected for who we truly are.

By sharing this article, you can inspire others to prioritize meaningful connections and to choose relationships that honor their worth. Remember, it’s not about who wants you; it’s about who values and respects you.
