A Moana Sequel Series is Coming to Disney+ First
While there’s no theatrical Moana 2 in active development yet, Disney is continuing the story in a different format. In January 2022, Disney announced a Moana sequel series for its streaming service Disney+.
The series will pick up where the first movie left off and follow Moana on new adventures. Disney has tapped David G. Derrick Jr. to direct the Moana sequel series. Derrick previously worked as a story artist on the original Moana film, so he’s familiar with the world and characters.
Having a Moana sequel show on Disney+ indicates that Disney is interested in revisiting this story universe. But it also likely means a theatrical Moana 2 film has been put on the back burner for now. Streaming and television is Disney’s big priority these days.
Still, the success of the Moana Disney+ series could motivate Disney to eventually give the green light to Moana 2 for theaters. But fans will have to be patient.
Dwayne Johnson is Producing a Live-Action Moana Movie
Another reason an animated Moana 2 isn’t in active development may be because of another Moana project in the works. When Disney originally announced various animated sequels in development, Dwayne Johnson revealed a live-action adaptation of Moana is also in progress.
Johnson, who voiced the demigod Maui in the first Moana, will produce and potentially star in the live-action version. Moana herself will also be recast. No release timeframe has been set for the live-action Moana.
Disney has had great success remaking many of its animated classics into live-action films, like The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. A live-action Moana makes sense following that trend.
But it also means resources are likely being devoted to that project rather than an animated follow-up. Disney may want to wait and see how the live-action Moana performs before deciding the next steps for the animated characters.
Don’t Expect Moana 2 in Theaters Soon
Let’s be real – it’s highly unlikely we’ll see Moana 2 hit theaters anytime in the next couple years. Disney animated sequels take years to make. And Disney always announces their theatrical sequel projects well in advance of their release dates.
For example, Frozen 2 was announced years before it came out in 2019. But so far, there’s been no official announcement regarding a theatrical Moana 2 entering development.
At minimum, we likely wouldn’t see a Moana sequel until 2024 or 2025. But the lack of any announcement yet indicates it’s not even in pre-production. Disney may be waiting for the right time to return to theaters with Moana 2.
Of course, that doesn’t mean Moana 2 won’t ever happen. Disney likes to take its time with animated sequels to ensure they live up to the original. Patience will be key for fans hoping to see Moana back on the big screen.
What Could Moana 2 Explore?
While Moana 2 isn’t officially confirmed, if and when it does get announced, there are a few directions the sequel could take the story and characters.
Potential Titles
Disney usually opts for numerical titles when naming sequels, so Moana 2 would be the most logical pick. But they could go in a different direction. Since music was such an integral part of the original, perhaps they’ll work in a song title like How Far I’ll Go Again or We Know the Way Back. Or they could reference Moana’s future adventures with a subtitle like Moana: Lost Voyage.
The Next Villain
The first Moana movie featured the lava demon Te Kā as the primary antagonist. She was later revealed to be the fallen deity Te Fiti. With Te Fiti now restored, who could the villain be in a potential Moana 2?
Disney could potentially introduce another powerful Polynesian god or demon to serve as the villain. Or they may want to ground the sequel in more human threats. The sequel could feature invading warriors threatening Moana’s people, or a vengeful chief from a rival tribe looking for payback after being helped by Maui and Moana.
An Older Moana
A sequel would likely take place several years after the original. It would be interesting to see Moana as a young adult chief leading her people. Dealing with the responsibilities of being a chief could create personal conflicts for an older Moana to overcome.
Disney could also introduce a potential love interest for Moana that competes with her duties as chief. And of course, she would face external threats to her people and land as well. An older Moana who still retains her adventurous spirit could drive an engaging story.
Maui’s Return
Maui was such an integral part of the first movie, it’s hard to imagine a Moana sequel without him. Given Maui developed a strong bond with Moana by the end, he will likely return as an ally in the sequel. Hopefully we’ll get another entertaining odd couple dynamic between Moana and Maui.
Some fans have theorized Maui could potentially turn on Moana if he feels abandoned after years apart. But a full betrayal seems unlikely given the character growth Maui went through in the first movie. Still, there could be some initial tension before Moana and Maui work as a team again. Their rapport was one of the highlights of the original, so fans would love to see them reunite.
